Bergen Beach Playground
LOCATION: Brooklyn, New york
CLIENT: NYC Parks
Bergen Beach Playground is a 0.93 acre park located in the residential neighborhood of Bergen Beach in Brooklyn. Once an island and amusement park similar to Coney Island, Bergen Beach became part of the mainland in the early 1900’s and remained undeveloped until the 1960s.
Nancy Owens Studio wanted the new design to provide a more interactive and exciting play experience for children and to increase the planted areas to include shade for the nearby school yard while protecting the existing mature trees. This design required extreme attention to sustainability and resilience as the playground had pre-existing drainage issues and is in the FEMA flood zone. NOS addressed this by adding bioswale plantings and a flush curb to capture runoff from the paved areas within the park.
